Car Commercials

!5P! Car Commercials

Have you ever seen the infamous Rube Goldberg Honda advertisement? It truly is amazing and won a ton of awards. At an estimated cost of just over 5 million dollars, this commercial supposedly took over six months to shoot. In the end, the commercial is only two-minutes long too! It makes you wonder why anyone in their right minds would want to spend all of that money on a commercial that is so short. However, it does get the point across, and what's more is that it keeps the audience's attention. But the bigger question is, after spending all of that time and money, does it work? Are more people likely to buy a Honda because of the commercial? Well, if you look at the numbers, Honda is arguably one of the most frequently purchased vehicles, but that's just it. Commercials are worth the investment of millions of dollars spent for only a couple of minutes of your time because if you're watching them and you go to a dealership as a result of seeing "that cool car commercial," then obviously something was done right.

Among other neat commercials out there, there is also a commercial that Volkswagen did. The video starts out showing a bride getting ready for her wedding. It then cuts to an image of a young guy speeding through rainy roads in a VW Jetta VR6, apparently trying to make it to the wedding on time. He gets stuck in traffic, but makes it there just in time. The doors fly open and the bride is at the altar about to marry her husband. It turns out the guy wasn't even the groom and the only words you hear throughout the entire video are the words spoken by the priest when this other gentleman flings the doors open: "Speak now or forever hold your peace." Befuddled viewers then realize it's a car commercial when the commercial then ends with a picture of the VW Jetta VR6 (the car that the gentleman was driving) with the sentence poised next to it saying, "Fasten your seat belts." Then it cuts to the Volkswagen slogan: "Drivers wanted."

At the heart of it all, car dealerships are full of salespeople falling over each other to get to you first so that they can try to convince you of all the reasons why you NEED to buy a car from them. Having said that, why would the commercials be any different? Commercials are a little more subtle than a car salesman. Sure, the car company is still trying to sell you a vehicle, but they have to be a little smoother about it.

Think about the last good car commercial that you saw. What was it about it that you liked? What made it keep your attention? Some of the car commercials out there are absolutely clever. They keep us guessing sometimes as to what's going to happen, but more importantly; they keep the consumers buying. It seems that as time goes on and the economic recession drags on, car dealerships are going to have to continue to come up with both the financial resources as well as the creativity needed to keep audiences engaged during commercials so that they can keep business going for their car dealerships to keep sales up.

Lewis Hamilton - Formula One Champion and Global Brand

!5P! Lewis Hamilton - Formula One Champion and Global Brand

It was probably the most nail-biting, right-to-the-wire race ever to take place in Formula One and on Sunday 2nd November 2008, floors all over the United Kingdom were pounded by hundreds of thousands of feet as racing fans literally jumped for joy when Lewis Hamilton finally achieved his dream: to become the Formula One World Champion.

Hearts leapt at the last when Timo Glock fell back and Hamilton made the fifth place he so desperately needed to get him those vital points, taking him just one point above Felipe Massa to clinch the revered title.

A few days, on as the celebrations reside, we can't help think about how this life changing experience is going to affect Lewis Hamilton, the youngest ever Formula One World Champion, who is now on course to become a global brand and possibly the highest earning sports person in history.

Born on the 7th of January 1985 in Stevenage, Hertfordshire and named after nine-time Olympic gold medal winner Carl Lewis, Hamilton's racing career started at the age of eight at Rye House Kart Circuit in his home county. It wasn't long before he started to match his namesake's winning ways and at the age of ten he knew just what he wanted to be when he grew up: approaching Ron Dennis, McLaren Formula One boss, for an autograph he bluntly told him he would one day be racing his cars!

As Hamilton's dream of making a career in motor racing gradually became reality over the years, his dedication to becoming a winner strengthened. But did he realise that not only would he become a Formula One hero, he would also become a world record holder, a global brand and probably one of the highest earning sports people in the world?

At only 23 years of age Lewis Hamilton has a good ten years left to reign over Formula One, and it has been estimated his earnings by 2012 could clock in at a staggering £500million, providing he keeps winning of course.

Currently occupying the top podium spot for the title of highest earning sports person is Tiger Woods who is set to have earned around a billion dollars from sport by 2010.

But whilst Lewis may not yet be on pole for this particular race, becoming a global brand will bring a substantial boost to his overall earnings thanks to a combination of his championship win; the fact that unlike other sports, Formula One is known throughout every continent of the world; and of course because of his sheer likeability and appeal to people of all ages and genders.

So with years of motor racing ahead of him, the only way seems to be up for Lewis Hamilton, the ordinary boy-done-good from Hertfordshire who has already, and will continue to inspire thousands of parents and children, showing them that nothing is impossible and that dreams really can be achieved if you work hard enough at achieving them.

Music Mixing - How I Did it - You Can Too!

!5P! Music Mixing - How I Did it - You Can Too!

Hello, F.F.O.M. (Future Fan Of Mine). I am # 13 of 14 children. I am a full time Musician, Singer, Songwriter, Arranger, Composer and Performer. I am currently an Independent musician, I used to be co-dependent.

Being one of 14, I have always been determined to "Do Everything Myself". Competition was fierce growing up, I HAD to learn how to "toot my own horn" to be seen / heard! As a result, I don't "farm-out" my work / jobs very much. I mix my own music, (check "reverb", arrange volume levels of vocals, instruments - the whole band) better than anybody can. I'll tell you how I do it. Hopefully, you'll discover that no one can mix your music as well as you can., too.

My music was created by me. I know just how it should sound. This is why I mix my own music! Your music was created by you, and the same applies.

First, my equipment. I have and use a digital recording studio, an AKAI DPS 16. It has 16 tracks, 8 recording inputs, a mixing board, and a virtual plethora of bells and whistles, for recording, mixing, repairing, etc. etc. It is @ 6 years "old". As a result of the 6 year old technology, I have a stand alone CD recorder / player. Current digital recorders have the CD recorder built in. Compared to what is "New", mine is rather dinosaur-ish. But, it works very well! I also use amplified microphones when recording.

Now, the good stuff!

1) Initially, I do a basic mix to a CD. I check every track for the proper sound: I listen for any "pops, humming, clicks or background noises" which need to be deleted; tone (Bass mid, treble); reverb (Do all the instruments sound like they're playing in the same room-club-house, or, do some sound like they are being played in another room? Very important to have this correct.); distortion; etc. All of my music, thus far, has vocals. I always have them "on top" of the mix. You can actually understand my lyrics! What a concept!

2) Next, before finalizing the CD, I put that mix on a cassette. Dino-tech, but, if I can make it sound good on a cassette, it'll sound GREAT on a CD! The cassette is reusable, too.

3) I then take my just mixed "Baby" to my "Acoustically Tuned" listening chamber, my car. With notebook in hand, I listen and write down any glaring mistakes I hear. I listen again, sometimes a few times, and when satisfied I go back to the mixing board. And try again.

4) I repeat steps 1, 2, and 3, many times, searching for audio perfection. It's like playing Baseball. Sometimes the ball is as big as a basketball, sometimes as small as a BB. When I think the CD to cassette sounds perfect, I stop mixing, and walk away. Overnight is good. Sometimes a whole day is needed.

5) Then, it is review time. Does it still sound good? Usually not! "I can't believe I missed that!" Or, "eeeeeewww, that sounds baaaad!" As in NOT GOOD! Back to mixing! Mixing music can also be compared to cooking, if a little salt, or salsa, or whatever, is good, then a lot more must be better! Right? I don't think so.

6) I do #'s 1 to 5 again. And again. And again. Until I hear perfection! I started with a lump of coal, now, I have a Diamond! At least I believe it is. Some of my songs I had to mix DOZENS of times. For the whole CD of 12 or 13 songs, that adds up to hundreds of mixes! Psycho! But, I love what I do!

7) Then, the BIG test. I have a few trustworthy people, listen to my work! I provide them with a sheet listing all of the songs on the CD for their corrections / opinions. They may hear things that I don't. "The vocals are too high above the band, it sounds like you're singing in one room and they're playing in another!" True comments I received from my listeners / critics.

8) Finally, when I'm pleased, they're pleased, and everything is as perfect as I can get it, I am done! Then I make a master, which is sent to the CD replicator. There the CD is mixed again, and the new mix is sent to me for my approval / checking. I listen to their mix very carefully. I learned that I must listen to: not only the whole song, BUT, the very, very end. Were the fade-outs done correctly? Was their "cut-off" correct? Did they cut-off the distorting guitar sound too soon? I check for it all. When their mix suits me, the mixing work is done. Finally!

That, is how I mix my music! You can, too!
